As with most video poker variations, Mississippi Stud doesn’t overcomplicate its feature list. Instead, we get a clear set of basic functions that help us navigate the game easily. It all works well, from the visible pay table to the dynamic buttons that display available functions according to whatever stage you get to in the game.
Our only issue came with the game’s guiding feature, which became pretty annoying after a while. Instead of highlighting the best option based on the hand you’ve been dealt, Mississippi Stud just gives you a pop-up warning whenever you pick what the game considers to be the least favourable option. It was quite frustrating in the long run, and although we understand how this could be helpful to beginners, there really should be an option for advanced players to turn it off.
Deal – After placing your ante bet, hit the deal button to receive your cards. From here you’ll need to decide whether to fold or add a 1x, 2x or 3x bet. The first bet is the riskiest since you wouldn’t have seen any of the three community cards, and you’ll need to base your wager on your hand alone. With every bet you place, you uncover one more community card and can follow up bets based on the combinations that do or don’t show up. There’s plenty of win potential with a 5,000x maximum win, but our wins were mostly pairs and three-of-a-kind. We did get a full house during one of our rounds, which gave us our biggest win of ₹55,000.
Undo – Hitting the undo button will remove the last bet you placed. This applies to both ante bets and additional bets that you place later on.
Clear – If instead you just want to clear the board and start fresh, then you’ll want to click the clear button instead. With the way the rebet & deal feature works, we didn’t have to use much of this, since the table is cleared anyways after every round.
Rebet & Deal – One of the best time-saving features in the game, the rebet and deal function repeats the same ante bet you had placed during the previous round and automatically deals. We used this most of the time unless we decided to increase or decrease our wagers for a particular round. It’s quick, easy, and simple to use.
Mississippi Stud is the perfect game for beginners who want a more guided poker experience. The features are really clear and easy to follow and the always-visible paytable lets you know exactly what you stand to win based on the cards you draw.
We enjoyed the high win potential that was on offer but were annoyed by the consistent interruptions from the game’s guiding feature. But if you’re willing to put up with a few pop-up warnings here and there, then you should give this a go.
NetEnt’s Jacks or Better Double Up has a similarly simple feature list but adds the option to double your winnings through its gamble feature. On one hand, we preferred the less intrusive guiding function but weren’t too impressed with the lower maximum bet of ₹500.
